why do we need backlinks?

I see many posts where people look for backlinks and I do not know why? I have websites that ranks very well with a single or 3-4 good links. Links that brings visitors. Too many links means too many low quality links. A low quality link is that link that is not clicked. Thant link that brings no visitors. Do you think that google does not compare nr of links with nr of clicks?
