How can I make my site earn money from Affliate programmes

Hi I have a site that we have been working on for three years now. It is a very popular Celebrity Gossip website and lifestyle magazine which has very heavy traffic each day which runs into the thousands.
We have another six months left before the site is the way we want it to look and where we will have all the sections that we want but our trouble is, we are not making money from affliate programmes and this is due to because we are not experienced in advertising.
Our strength is from writing and also to getting traffic to our site but when it comes to knowing how to make money from our site we are clueless.
