Iconic Yahoo! Billboard Lives On

“A nice place to stay on the Internet”
“Icon” is a powerful word. It evokes everything from images of faith to Hollywood starlets to the geniuses of technology.

There are icons in the pantheon of advertising, too. Some, like, David Ogilvy, are pioneers of the “Mad Men” art and science. Others are historic outdoor signage. The city of San Francisco—“Bagdad by the Bay,” as the late newspaper columnist and city icon, Herb Caen, called it—is famous for them. Great iconic advertising art that has graced the city’s skyline includes the bright lights of the “Coca-Cola” sign, “17 Reasons Why!” and the Doggie Diner puppy chef made famous in the comic panels of “Zippy the Pinhead.” This public art is so powerful and imbued with meaning that preservationists have fought to save them. City people navigate by them.
