Is PPC a good idea?

I’ve been working on a small group of adult blogs, some a little more micro-niche than others and so far I’ve had little success. The only ads I have up at the moment are ones pointing to my affiliates hoping for sales. I’m afraid of putting PPC ads on my site because I don’t want to lose potential sales to those ads.
So I’m wondering, for someone in my position, would it be best to keep pushing on? Add more content regularly and just hope for those sales to start rolling in? Or have I been a complete nitwit and should I have been using PPC advertising since day 1?
