testing method for affiliate program

Hi all,
here’s my situation…
i wanted to start making money in the affiliate business but i’m really low in budget so i will try bum marketing. i read that it is important to know the demographic and it is also important to know the source of your incoming link. now my question is:
which one is more important if you are new to this business?
i know it’s a newbie question but i hope my question make sense. thanks for your time and insight
