Google Going Carbon Neutral
Google has announced it is increasing its environmental protection efforts, aiming to go carbon neutral by the end of the year. Carbon neutrality is achieved by a trendy practice of offsetting a company’s affect on the environment through actions like planting trees and investing in renewable energy. Google plans investments in renewable energy, including the installation of large solar power arrays, as well as the purchase of carbon offsets.
Funny, when Yahoo announced a carbon-neutral program, I criticized them, because it, like most of these moves by companies with little environmental impact (an internet company caring about the environment is like a gasoline company caring about clean HTML code) it is largely an ideological one based on the politics of the company’s employees, just like I’m sure it is at Google.
