Ranking High on SERP Nationally, Not Only Locally

Hello SEO’s out there!
I have been an SEO for about 5 years now , but I have recently run into the situation where about 80% of my clients traffic is coming from their home state and the rest is spread across the other 49 states and the rest of the world. This would be great if the company was only a local business, however they are an online business as well as a business that resides in a certain city.
They rank very well (1-3) for some highly searched competitive head terms, however when I get searches done for them out of state, they fall to the second page for that and several other terms.
My question is, what should I do to gain more of a national authority rather than just in my city and state?
