WASHINGTON — Rep. Rob Wittman (R-1st) on Wednesday introduced legislation that provide a tax credit of up to $1,000 to people who "telework" from home instead of commuting to work.
“A number of constituents made the point that if teleworking were an alternative to going to the office they’d jump at the opportunity," Wittman said in a press release. He noted that commuters spend an average of 8.5 days of each year on the road.
Eligible employee would have to work at least 75 days a year. The tax credit would be geared to cover expenses such as furnishings or electronic equipment needed to work from home.
A study by the National Science Foundation claims teleworking increases productivity by 87%. Similarly, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that 73% of teleworkers say they accomplish more work on telework days than when in the office.
