What is the Sync / Re-Sync button for?

When I go to my manage forums area in the ACP, there is a button / icon that is to sync / re-sync each forum. I have taken a screenshot of the area below.. What is it that it is syncing? What is it syncing it too? I have never done it because I don't know what it does. Can anyone let me know please? Thanks!
