Question about backlinks from Blogs

Hey All,
I'm relatively new to SEO so I apologize in advance if this question seems a bit silly. I noticed some successful businesses run a blog separate from their site where they use anchor text once or twice in the text to link back to their site. The content is all very relevant to their website of course.
