Is posting a couple posts then your affiliate product a good way to make sales?

So I’ve looked around for some affiliate sites that popup when I search my niche, and the first thing I see are sites that have a few posts about the niche — like free information. Then I see the affiliate product review on the front page of the site. And after checking the date it’s been written over 2 years ago.
So my question is: Would just setting up a site, writing some articles, then a review of the affiliate product for everyone to see be a good way to set up my affiliate website? Or would I have to work on it harder than that?
I’m not asking this because I want to slack off and just get instant cash flow, but I’ve seen this a lot with sites and I wanted to know if it’s something that works or it’s something that amateurs like myself do?
Thanks in advance!
