Is it really considered cheating?

Just want to get your thoughts on this. Would it really be considered cheating if you're in a relationship and you have dinner with a friend or colleague of an opposite sex?
My theory is that as long as your intention is nothing more than just a dinner and get to know the person better, then it should be ok.
