Hi… Newbie here with strategy question.

Hi,
I am brand new to this forum and for the most part brand new to seo although I have been watching videos, reading posts, learning about link building, etc. I’m fairly sure I only know the basics. Anyways, I look forward to learning from all of you and maybe down the line helping the newbies.
I’d like to begin by asking a strategy question. I’m considering paying for some link building but am not really sure what sort of results I can expect.
I am targeting a keyword on google that has about 9,900 searches a month.
I am currently ranked #26
Last month I used google adwords to get about 600 visitors and from them adsense shows the following stats:
6,251 pageviews
CTR of about 0.37%
and CPC at about $0.12
So after spending probably about 5X as much I made about $3
