Affiliate tracking?

Hi everyone,
I’m fairly new to this so I’m not sure where to start. A client has a subscription website and he wants to setup affiliates. It’s very niche. I’ve been told to use G analytics filters/campaigns with the URL builder but I’m not sure how to even do that or if it’d be optimal once the number of affiliates grew…
Any advice would be great or software recommendations. If anyone uses G analytics for this and could tell me the steps so I can test it out that’d be kick-ass as well
