Affiliate Marketing reasonable expectations

I have read a lot about Affiliate Marketing and done a good bit of research. I wanted to see if my expectations were reasonable from people who have more experience.
If I have a search phrase that is scoring around 5,000 searches monthly according to Google Ad-words, I would expect that this is a reasonable sized market to start out with for a course of a few months. I also checked Google Trends and the phrase seems to be trending upward over time period shown in the graph. I’ve tallied up the back-links on the first two pages of google results and they are not quite linear. The top result has around 7,000 back-links but I’m fairy certain I could build that many on my own in a decent amount of time.
