Opinions on how best to start

Hi,
I have been marketing a little while and I would like others opinions on the best way to market. I have been told, many times, the money is in the list. I am building one but it is a time consuming and long term project. I needed money now and found that selling small priced, but quality products makes you money now and works fast while building your list.
Any Thoughts?
